The 41st Annual American Music Awards take place Sunday in LA

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (FOX 11 / CNS) - Rapper Macklemore and his producing partner Ryan Lewis lead the pack of nominees heading into tonight's 41st annual American Music Awards at the Nokia Theater, although Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake are also hoping for strong showings, while Rihanna will receive the inaugural AMA Icon Award.

Macklemore and Lewis have six nominations, followed by Swift and Timberlake with five each. Rihanna, Robin Thicke and Florida Georgia Line each have four.

Macklemore & Lewis, Rihanna, Swift, Timberlake and Bruno Mars will compete for the top honor of artist of the year. Macklemore & Lewis are also up for new artist of the year, along with Florida Georgia Line, Ariana Grande, Imagine Dragons and Phillip Phillips.

Pitbull will host the show, which like many recent music shows, will likely generate more excitement for its performances than the actual awards.

Katy Perry is expected to open the show, while Jennifer Lopez will perform a tribute to salsa legend Celia Cruz. Also performing will be TLC, Timberlake, Imagine Dragons, Pitbull and Ke$ha, Luke Bryan, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Lewis, One Direction, A Great Big World, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande and Florida Georgia Line.

Perhaps the most anticipated performance will be from Miley Cyrus, fresh off her much-talked-about "twerking" display at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Rihanna will receive the inaugural AMA Icon Award, which honors "an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level."
