“Soxcess” For NJ’s Homeless

Posted: Updated:
Hoboken, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

A Jersey City high school student has just been honored by Mayor Steven Fulop for going above and beyond and helping New Jersey’s homeless community two socks at a time.

Tis the season for giving and homeless shelters across New Jersey have been handling an influx of people needing food and other items this month.

Jeremy Garriga is senior at County Prep High School in Jersey City and he’s a long-time volunteer at the Hoboken Homeless Shelter. Jeremy wanted to do more than just volunteer so he asked the shelter’s executive director what the people coming to the shelter really needed and she said socks!

And every type of sock comes in handy for the homeless. “People come in with dress socks and say I don’t know if this will help, but what they don’t realize is there are people in the shelter who are looking for jobs and they can’t use the regular sox, they need dress socks. So every type of sock will help,” Garriga said.

Garriga has donated close to 2,800 pairs of socks and other winter basics at the Project Homeless Connect, the Palisades Emergency Residence Corporation in Union City, The York Street Project, St. Lucy’s Shelter and The Jersey City Peace Movement in Journal Square.

Mayor Fulop said the city is recognizing Jeremy because he came up with an idea to get corporations and city hall to donate socks. “Jeremy recognizes the fact that there are a lot of people in the community that don’t have basic things and he is out there pushing for them, and seeing young people get involved like this is something we want to encourage,” Fulop said.

If you’re interested in donating, you can find these sock bins will be all over Hoboken and Jersey City. It doesn’t take much to help; every pair will insure that one person doesn’t have to have their feet out in the cold this winter.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
