Republican Mark Obenshain says he's seeking a recount in the historically close race for Virginia attorney general.
Obenshain announced his intentions Tuesday in a news release and said he would formally request the recount on Wednesday.
A mere 165 votes separate Obenshain and Democrat Mark Herring, who has already declared himself the victor in the race. Both men have announced transition teams.
The State Board of Elections certified the race on Monday, declaring Herring the winner.
But Obenshain has signaled all along he would seek a recount, citing the closest margin in a statewide race in modern Virginia political history.
A recount would be at taxpayer expense because the margin between the two is less than one-half of 1 percent.
