Fitness Mom Under Fire Again

Posted: Updated:

The California mom who posted a photo of herself with her kids, with the headline, "What's Your Excuse?" is under fire again. This time, she's being attacked for criticizing a selfie campaign for plus-sized women.

This photo of Maria Kang and her three young sons with the caption, "What's Your Excuse?" got millions of hits on Facebook last month. However, her most recent post didn't sit well with the social media site. Kang was temporarily booted from Facebook for criticizing photos of plus-sized women in lingerie.

The "selfies" in question were submitted as part of a Facebook campaign launched by a plus size shop, Curvy Girl Lingerie.

Kang argued that the photos normalize obesity. In her post, now deleted by Facebook, but still available on her blog, she wrote:

We need to change this strange mentality we are breeding in the U.S. and start celebrating people who are a result of hard work, dedication and discipline. I'm not bashing those who are proud and overweight, I am empowering those who are proud and healthy to come out and be the real role models in our society.

After being blocked by Facebook and then reading a Yahoo article that she says misportrays her, Kang responded in another blog post, saying that she was not happy Facebook tried to censor her speech when she was trying to talk about the dangers of obesity.

"When we normalize being unhealthy we create complacency to positively change," she wrote. "Maybe one doesn't feel their weight and unhealthy habits are taking a toll now, but it's not a matter of ‘if' but ‘when' your organs, bones and overall body succumb to the additional pressure you are applying to it."

Facebook has since apologized for suspending Kang's account, but Maria says that Facebook will not restore her post.
