Online Gaming Officially Legal In NJ

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

On Tuesday night at midnight, online gaming was officially legalized in New Jersey. Six casinos, including: Bally’s, Trump Plaza, Caesars, Borgata, Tropicana, and Trump Taj Mahal have been authorized to partner with online gaming sites.

In order to gamble online, you must register first, which can be rather frustrating. It asks for your social security number and your cell phone number so that they can text you a verification code that you would then type back into the gaming website.

After all this, you have to download a tracker, which is supposed to make sure you were only gambling in New Jersey. There have been glitches with these, especially since someone gambling in a town close to Pennsylvania could be denied access because the tracker thinks they’re in Pennsylvania instead of New Jersey.

The Division of Gaming Enforcement is aware that there are some glitches. They also acknowledge that some banks and credit card companies say they are not going to accept gambling transactions from people in New Jersey.

It seems that the launch of the online website reminds a lot of people of the failure of the Obamacare website. Marco Valerio, a gambling writer, says it’s a common comparison. “I was interviewing State Senator Ray Lesniak the other day, and he used the exact same comparison. Apparently it’s very popular to compare online gaming failures with Obama’s failures for whatever reason,” he said.

Even though some people may see this as a failure, Valerio doesn’t think so. “If you look at it in perspective, I think it’s more of a success than people will give it credit for,” he said.

Governor Chris Christie has a lot riding on the success of this launch. The governor estimates $160 million in 2013-2014 online gambling taxes. In order to meet his budget estimates, there has to be $1 billion in revenue generated between now and June. There’s a lot of doubt that this’ll actually happen.

“It’s a point of debate within the gaming industry itself. I’ve looked at that data from multiple sources. The lower end of the first year revenue for online gaming is about $200million, the high end is a billion. Obviously the gap is big there,” Valerio said.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
