Kane leads the charge as Blackhawks rally to win in Calgary 3-2

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago Blackhawks fans were frustrated throughout most of Wednesday night's game. Those who endured were rewarded with a three goal third period comeback. It wasn't a thing of beauty but the Hawks got out of Calgary with a 3-2 victory.

It was a contest that featured two rookie goaltenders.

Between the pipes for Chicago was Antti Raanta making his first NHL start. Raanta didn't have a great performance but he was solid and good enough to pick up the win. Calgary only had 22 shots on goal and the Blackhawks were credited with 30 shots. More meaningful was the fact they missed the net 16 times and the Flames blocked 29 shot attempts.

Calgary goalie Reto Berra, who made his debut versus Chicago on November 3 was back between the pipes. In that game Berra stopped 42 of 44 shots and was the main reason the Flames won in overtime. Since then Berra's lofty .955 save percentage had slid to .889. Berra was good once again but benefited from some luck.

In the end Berra's good fortune took a turn as the Hawks scored twice in a 56-second span in the final frame to tie the score. Patrick Kane opened the scoring and quickly Patrick Sharp joined the party. It was Kane again who let go a wicked backhand shot and surprised Berra with 18 seconds left in the game. With the victory the Blackhawks are guaranteed a winning road trip.

The Flames did a nice job of checking and the Hawks got away from playing a simple game. To the credit of Joel Quenneville's gang they stayed determined as finally Berra and the Flames cracked. It was a big win as the road trip concludes with back to back games versus Dallas and Phoenix this weekend.

It was another top performance from Kane and Duncan Keith. Both players are playing at a very high level. Marian Hossa has been amazing all season. Versus the Flames, Hossa notched an assist and had a game high five shots on goal.

After having a difficult start to the trip in Colorado the Hawks have rallied with four straight wins. They have beaten all the teams they should have in the Jets, Oilers, and Flames. The Blackhawks also got by with some late game heroics in Vancouver. The final two games of the trip will be a stern test, and Raanta probably will get one of the starts.

Al's Shots

Brandon Pirri had a difficult game. He committed a needless penalty in the second period. Then at the start of the third frame Pirri mishandled the puck in the offensive zone and then lost his stick. That combination of events set the stage for the Flames second goal. It will be interesting to see how Pirri bounces back and if his ice time will be affected in Dallas.

Michal Handzus (42%), Andrew Shaw (38%), Pirri (33%) and Ben Smith (20%), all had faceoff woes in Calgary.
