Tyler Armstrong: I'll Be The Youngest Ever To Do It

Posted: Updated:

Tyler Armstrong of Yorba Linda, Calif., is nine years old and an experienced mountain climber.  He's already climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Whitney.

And in two weeks, Tyler leaves for South American where he will climb Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest peak (22,837 ft.) in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres.

He's doing it to raise money for a good cause:  to raise money fort CureDuchenne, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds research to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Tyler, his parents and little brother join Lisa Breckenridge and Maria Sansone on Good Day L.A.

Fun Facts About Tyler Armstrong: (Source: TopWithTyler.com)

1) Mount Kilimanjaro (19,341 feet) is the tallest mountain on the African continent. His ascent to the 19,341 ft. summit was to help raise funds and awareness for CureDuchenne.  The minimum age limit set by the Tanzania National Park Authorities for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is 10 years old. However, Tyler was able to obtained a special permit through the great help of Travel Dirty to climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

2) Tyler climbed the Lemosho Route. It took him 8 days of climbing round trip. He hiked approximately 48.5 miles with an elevation gain of 10,644 feet. The Kilimanjaro National Park shows that only 30% of hikers actually reach the summit. However, Tyler trained hard to be one of the 30% to successfully summit Mount Kilimanjaro.

3) Tyler became interested in helping boys who aren't able to take on the challenges of mountain climbing when he met a Duchenne boy close to his age who is wheelchair-bound. Tyler realized he could use his athletic abilities to help others. Tyler represented the over 300,000 boys worldwide when he faced this epic, eight-day challenge and adventure.
