One Family Celebrates Thanksgivukkah

Posted: Updated:

Not only was it Thanksgiving yesterday, but it was also the first day of Hanukkah.

And it won't happen again for thousands of years. FOX 29'S Leigh Scheps takes us to one family's dual celebration, also known as Thanksgivukkah, in Cherry Hill.

Not only is the turkey the centerpiece of the holiday this year, but also the Menorah.

And for the first time ever, people are calling it a menurkey. As the Greenberg family lights the candles on Hanukkah, they're also getting ready for a festive feast.

"Turkey started at 7 O' clock," said Robyn Greenberg of Cherry Hill

This turkey isn't for Hanukkah, it's for Thanksgiving.

"It's a historic moment for us to celebrate," she said.

The dradle decorations garnish the table full of pilgrims because for the first time in 125 years, the first day of the Jewish holiday falls on Thanksgiving.

The rare coincidence comes because Hanukkah is based on the Hebrew Calendar, whereas Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November.

"It's cool because you get to celebrate both at the same time," said Alexis Galarza.

Celebrating both at the same time also means learning a new Thanksgivukkah song, all while the adults do what most do on turkey day--have their eyes glued to the game and their fantasy football teams.

Then there's the food. Two traditions are combined.

"Sweet potatoes is what we would have for Thanksgiving. So we took the sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving and put them in with the Latkas for Hanukkah and we have sweet potato Latkas," said Greenberg. "It's twice the work for the people who do the actual cooking, which I have to say the credit goes to my mom and mother in law."

Probably the best part of the day, at least for the kids, is opening Hanukkah presents. This year, they're extra thankful. After all, it is Thanksgiving, so enjoy the holiday while you can, because Thanksgivukkah won't happen again for another 70,000 plus years.
