Max Page's Newest Mission: Delivering JoyJars To Kids With Congenital Heart Conditions

Posted: Updated:

Max Page is best known for playing Mini-Darth Vader in the blockbuster 2011 Volkswagen Superbowl commercial.  As the commercial went viral Max used his fame as a platform to spread awareness of childhood heart conditions.

Max was born with a condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. A condition in which the various chambers of the heart don't work properly with each other or the lungs.  Max has undergone five  open-heart surgeries to reconstruct blood flow pathways between his heart and lungs. He now relies on a pacemaker to keep his heartbeat steady and stable.  Despite all the heart surgeries, Max is currently healthy and active.  He plays golf, recently went whitewater rafting , and runs and plays with his friends.

Having spent so much time in the hospital himself, Max is keenly aware of the pain, boredom and depression hospitalized kids often deal with.  He's now on a mission to help address that.  Max has teamed with the Jesse Rees Foundation to deliver JoyJars to kids hospitalized with heart conditions.  JoyJars are filled with toys, and are designed to bring a child a few minutes of distraction and happiness.  A few minutes may not seem like much, but Max says having one good thing happen during an overall rough day could change his entire memory of that day.

JoyJars were created by 12-year-old Brain Cancer Patient Jesse Reese. While undergoing treatment at Children's Hospital Orange County Jesse started filling jars with toys from her own toy box and giving them to other pediatric cancer patients.  Jesse had 2 rules for the jars, "No cheesy toys" and "All filled up to the top. No air."   Jesse filled 3000 JoyJars  herself before she passed away in 2012.  Now other kids like Max are carrying her torch.
