Metro-North plagued with problems and derailments

This Sunday's accident is not the only problem Metro-North has had this year.

In May, an eastbound train derailed in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Eventually being struck by a train going westbound. 76 people were injured.

Then 11 days later, a track foreman was struck and killed by a train in West Haven.

And in July, a freight train full of garbage derailed on the Hudson line in the Bronx about a half-mile away from Sunday's incident.

In that instance, there were 25 cars, 10 of which derailed.

Partial service was restored four days later, but full service did not return for more than a week.

Then this fall, Metro-North had major service problems on the new haven line after a high-voltage feeder cable failed.

An 8 mile stretch of the line was affected. Passengers dealt with service cancellations and disruptions for about two weeks.

An 8 mile stretch of the line was affected. Passengers dealt with service cancellations and disruptions for about two weeks.

Train accident injuries in total this year have been higher than any in the past 10.

Through August, 123 people were injured in Metro-North train accidents. Before this year, the highest number was seven in 2007.

Metro-North derailments peaked at seven in 2006, but dropped to five in 2011.

There were three last year.

After the fatal derailment on Sunday, officials are demanding an investigation into the way Metro-North handles their safety process.

    Basil Paterson, the father of former New York Governor David Paterson, died Wednesday night at the age of 87. The trailblazing Democratic politician from Harlem served in the state Senate, as deputy mayor of New York City, as secretary of state of New York and was appointed by the New York Senate as a commissioner of the Port Authority of NY and NJ. In 1970, he ran for lieutenant governor, the second black nominee of a major party for statewide office in New York.
