Dr. Mike Talks About Energy Drinks Effects And 'Fat But Fit'

Posted: Updated:

We've known for a while that energy drinks are not the best for your heart, but a new study sheds more light on their effects.

According to Dr. Mike, MRIs of the heart have shown an increase in contractility when one drinks energy drinks. Contractions get much more vigorous, says Dr. Mike. This could lead to rhythm problems and have potentially contributed to more than 21,000 ER visits.

If you have any heart history…forget about it. It's the caffeine and the taurine in the drinks that lead to problems. Dr. Mike also warns about mixing the energy drink with alcohol. Popular college drinks like the Jager Bomb should definitely not be drunk by anyone with any heart rhythm problem.

Many energy drinks have much more caffeine than coffee, so people should definitely be cautious if they are susceptible to coffee's effects.

Dr. Mike also talked about a meta-analysis that looked at people who would normally be classified as "overweight," but don't have any disease. The analysis showed that these people still had a higher risk of dying over a ten year period. The reason, according to Dr. Mike, is fat in the liver. It could lead to liver problems later on.

"You need to put money in your health 401K," emphasized Dr. Mike. "You need to eat less calories, exercise, sleep enough, and you'll be okay!"

Insurance policies have rules governing what's covered and what's not. Generally, they make sense. The rules are designed to prevent unreasonable costs from being passed along to the insurer, and by extension to other insurance customers. But listen to Sheree Kober's story.
