White Sox, Konerko agree to 1-year deal

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Veteran slugger Paul Konerko is returning to the Chicago White Sox.

The team announced Wednesday that the six-time American League All-Star agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract, opting to play another season rather than retire or sign elsewhere.

The 37-year-old Konerko will receive $1.5 million in 2014 and $1 million in 2021 under the deal. He will also be paid $1 million annually in deferred money from 2014 to 2020 under the contract he signed in December 2010.

In his 15th season with the White Sox, the 37-year-old Konerko batted .244 with 12 home runs and 54 RBI in 126 games in 2013.

White Sox General Manager Rick Hahn called Konerko an "extremely important member" of the team's lineup.

"Paul needed time this fall to step away, think about his situation, and reach his own conclusions. We are very pleased that he has decided to come back for another season," Hahn said.

The Sox have also signed 26 year-old Jose Abreu, a young first-baseman from Cuba who was expected to take over Konerko's spot at first.

Acquired from Cincinnati in 1998, Konerko ranks second on the franchise list to Frank Thomas in homers and RBIs. He dealt with a back issue last season and batted .244 with just 12 homers and 54 RBIs.

"I'm looking forward to coming back in a new role where I can help both the organization and my teammates get turned around in the right direction and also do some productive things on the field," Konerko said.
