Woman Gets Royal Thanks for Thoughtful Gesture

Posted: Updated:

One Tennessee resident's thoughtful gesture to the royal family got a royal thank you in return.

For Mary Anderson crochet has been a hobby all her life.

"It was just part of me and I just enjoy doing it," Anderson said. "I started crocheting because so many of the young girls were having babies."

She makes a pair of handmade booties and a matching hat for every nurse, family member, and friend's newborn in her life.

"I think they need them and I enjoy working for people," Anderson said.

So when Prince George was born this past summer, Mary got to work.

"I had it made but I still didn't think it was pretty enough to send, but everybody talked me into it. So I called my daughter in law, I got a box and boxed it up, and she carried it down to the post office," Anderson said.

And so Mary Anderson's little care package traveled all the way to London without a thought until a month later a thank you note addressed to Mary Frances Anderson at Oakwood community living center - sent by royal mail and all - from Buckingham Palace.

"I could not believe my eyes 'cause I know they could've got thousands of letters and congratulations and stuff," Anderson said. "It says the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were most touched by this thoughtful gift you kindly sent on the occasion of the birth of their son, Prince George."

It's a story she'll have to share for years to come one that's fit for a king.

"I just wanted them to have it, something from the volunteer state, Tennessee, Dyersburg," Anderson said.
