Police say a 3-year-old child has died after being hit by a truck while in the middle of a crosswalk at 20th Street and Camelback Road.
Phoenix police say a 10-year-old girl was pushing her 3-year-old brother, Anthony Meade, in a stroller with her mother, grandmother and another sibling when a 26-year-old driver turning left hit them.
Both a motor officer and a man passing by, who happened to be a doctor, tried to help the boy before he was taken to a hospital.
Despite their efforts, Meade was pronounced dead on Wednesday night.
No others were injured.
Now police say the driver may have been under the influence.
It was a heartbreaking scene -- a teddy bear left behind.
"I absolutely feel for the family," said Cathy Ross.
Authorities say a truck heading north on 20th Street turned left onto Camelback, hitting the 3-year-old.
People who live and work in the area say this crosswalk can be dangerous.
"I'm from back east and I've never seen it as aggressive as it is here," said Ross.
'I've gotten close to where I've almost gotten hit," said Chris Thurman. "People just come right out and don't even look."
Police say they believe the driver of the truck may have been under the influence of drugs. Investigators took a blood test and say the results could take a few weeks.
"That's really said. Only 3-years-old, that's so little time to leave," said Thurman.
