Scottsdale Police: Man shoots himself during encounter

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

Scottsdale police say a 52-year-old man is dead after an encounter with officers who responded to a silent 911 call from the man's home near 82nd Street and Highland.

This happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday night.  911 operators reportedly got a silent 911 call from the home and sent two officers to investigate.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they say the front door was open.  They proceeded to go inside and found Gordon Durack laying on a bed in the back bedroom with a gun next to him.

According to officers, they told Durack not to touch the gun, but he ignored them and pointed the weapon toward officers, then put his gun to his head and fired one round.

In the meantime, according to police, an officer fired in the direction of Durack, but missed.  At the same time the officer fired his weapon, Durack allegedly put a gun up his head and shot himself.

Police say Durack was pronounced dead at the home.

Durack reportedly lived with one roommate, who was not at the residence at the time of the shooting.

Authorities say the 911 call was disconnected before the caller said anything and that officers went to the home after there was no answer then an operator returned the call.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
