Chemicals, machines and ecstasy pills -- that's what officers say they found inside an apartment complex that houses Arizona State University students.

Police pulled the suspect , identified as Andrew James Gajkowski, 20, over for a carpool lane violation while he was driving on Interstate 17 near Thomas Road.  That's when they found a backpack, full of pills and some cocaine.

After that traffic stop, investigators got two warrants: one of the Gajkowski's family home in Goodyear, the other for his home at the Vista Del Sol Apartments right across from the ASU campus near Apache and Rural Roads.

Inside, investigators found what they're calling an ecstasy pill factory -- complete with motorized pill presses and plenty of raw materials to make ecstasy pills.  The Department of Public Safety says this was a major operation, but it came as a big surprise to others in the suspect's building.

"I had no idea," said an ASU student.  "It's pretty quiet here and for that to happen, it is kind of shocking."

Vista Del Sol is an ASU student-only housing complex.

Investigators raided the Gajkowski's apartment around 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

"We find in that apartment all the makings of a pill factory.. an ecstasy pill factory," said DPS' Bart Graves.

In addition to the pill press, they found more than 30 pounds of the raw material used to make the drug, as well as thousands of pills ready for use.

"I was shocked that something like this was going on here.  It is usually pretty quiet on this floor and nothing really goes on," said Matthew Penso.

Investigators have also detained five others, two of them are ASU students.  DPS says they re associates of the suspect and some of them live in the massive complex too.

"This kid over here cooking ecstasy in his apartment.. it is putting a lot of people in danger," sand Brendon James.

Now investigators are trying to figure out how this operation worked, how many more were helping out and how the suspect was able to get all the raw materials to make the drug.

Gajkowski is facing charges of possession of marijuana, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of a dangerous drug for sale, transportation of a dangerous drug for sale, manufacture of a dangerous drug, conducting an illegal enterprise and conspiracy.
