Letters for Christmas: One teen's simple request for the holidays

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Looking for a way to send some holiday cheer? Try dropping a line to Lucas Hoelscher, a 14-year-old Springfield, Ohio resident with spinal muscular atrophy type I.

Lucas, part of triplet sons, was diagnosed with the disease when he was 10 months old and was told he wouldn't last his first year. However, he defied the odds against the genetic disorder and now at 14 and a half years old, is preparing to experience another holiday season with his family.

Lucas, who is unable to talk or move but is 100 percent cognitive, enjoys receiving letters and cards in the mail because his life completely revolves around his visual skills. He can only communicate by making sounds or moving his eyes.

So this year, Lucas asked for only one thing from Santa: letters.

Lucas' mother sent Patty, sent out his request to receive mail and got much more. His story went viral and now the holiday wishes are pouring in from around the globe.

"Today alone we've received 294 letters in the mail," Patty said. "His day is so routine, [the mail] gives him something to look forward to."

A 7-year-old girl named Sammie writes to Lucas every day, and a 3-year-old boy sent him a letter with an ornament he picked out especially for Lucas.

For those who would like to write to Lucas this holiday season, his mailing address is: 3092 Wyandot Drive, Springfield, Ohio 45502. There is also a ‘Letters for Lucas' Facebook group that has grown to nearly 1,150 members.

The Hoelscher's goal is to read every single letter to Lucas, and, despite having buckets full, they hope the letters keep coming all year around.
