CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Suburban firefighters took a cold dive as they tried to save a deer that fell through ice in Willow Springs. Unfortunately, the five point buck did not survive, succumbing to hypothermia on Monday.

Rescue crews suited up along the shore of the Des Plaines River as the animal surrounded by ice struggled find its way back out of the water in Columbia Woods. Two men tied to lines broke through the ice, making a path toward the buck.

Things looked good when the crew reached him and he was able to follow the edge of the sheet of ice back toward land. But for some reason the buck got turned around, with the two men following him at a safe distance, and got stuck again.

AirFOX observed crews eventually tying a line to the deer and dragging him up onto the shore, as exhaustion took over the animal that had been in the water for at least half an hour by that point. His two rescuers spent at least 15-20 minutes in the freezing water.

Emergency officials said the stress caused by the incident and the amount of time spent in the water did not bode well for the buck, but they hoped he will make it through. They were still trying to wake him when AirFOX took a live shot for Good Day Chicago.
