Jenni Rivera: An Anniversary Of A Superstar's Death

Posted: Updated:

It's been a year since Mexican-American banda singer Jenni Rivera and six others died in a plane crash in Northern Mexico.  The 43-year-old Long Beach native was a mother of five, a reality TV star and a three time Grammy nominee.   On the one year anniversary of her death, Mexican investigators have released a preliminary report on the cause of the crash that shocked her millions of fans, here and in Mexico.

Included among the findings are concerns about the age of the plane and of one of its two pilots, 43 and 78 respectively.  Also, the aircraft had been involved in an earlier crash.  Still, there has been no official conclusion as to the cause of the Learjet's fatal nose-dive.

By no coincidence, this week Rivera's record company has released a new album featuring songs from her final performance, given just hours before she died.

Rivera's success as a performer and businesswoman after a childhood of relative poverty in Long Beach  was an inspiration to her young fans, who held vigils here in her honor for several nights following word of her death.  See the video above of one such memorial, at her mother's home in Lakewood.

The report this week on the crash investigation is just one component of the story.  Families of the other crash victims have yet to resolve lawsuits against the company that owned the plane, remnants of which have been brought to the U.S. for further analysis.
