(FOX 11 CNS) - A man who was fatally burned today inside a van at a South Los Angeles gas station may have been trying to steal fuel from an underground tank, authorities said.
The body was found in the 4400 block of Avalon Boulevard about 6:30 a.m., said Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations office.
Homicide detectives were sent to investigate the circumstances of the death, Eisenman said.
The charred body was that of a male, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. His name was not immediately available.
LAPD Officer Manuel Gomez told reporters at the scene that the man may have been trying to steal gasoline from an underground tank at the gas station.
"It appears that there was ... some type of pump coming from the vehicle, to the port of the tank," Gomez told CBS2.
