Mother charged after daughter reported missing - FOX 35 News Orlando

Police say mother reported daughter missing 'as a cry for attention'

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have charged an East Point mother after she allegedly admitted to falsely reporting that her 3-year-old daughter was missing.

Officers and firefighters searched an East Point neighborhood for two hours in frigid temperatures for Kamile Shorter on Tuesday night. A Levi's Call was about to be issued when the girl was found.

Kamile's mother, Cyndi Cuffie, initially said the little girl was playing in the backyard when she suddenly vanished, but later admitted the story wasn't true, according to police.

"The child was located at the Hapeville Police Department," said Lt. Cliff Chandler of the East Point Police Department. "They were contacted earlier this afternoon by a daycare in Hapeville. The child was apparently dropped off there earlier today by the mother prior to our agency being contacted about her being missing."

Police said they believe the mother dropped her child off at the Hapeville daycare and then reported her missing as a cry for attention.

"We believe Ms. Cuffie was going through a depressive state and we think that she was motivated by trying to keep some family members and a boyfriend in her life," Chandler said.

Authorities have charged Cyndi Cuffie with making false statements to police. That is a felony charge.

Police said the child will be placed in the custody of Division of Family and Children Services.
