Born 17 weeks early, baby miraculously beats the odds

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Baby Meghan is being called a Christmas miracle. Born weighing less than a can of soda at 17 weeks early, she beat all odds and survived.

Now, five months after she was born, she's going home.

'I've waited a very long time for her and she's truly a miracle," Renee says of her baby girl.

Renee was 6 months pregnant, sitting at her baby shower when her water broke.

"I kept thinking, they're doctors, they're miracle workers, they're going to make this all just go away and I just remember my husband saying, ‘we're going to be here until November,'" Renee recalls.

The little fighter was born 17 weeks premature and came out feet first, weighing 15 ounces and measuring 8 inches long. Her father's wedding ring fit all the way up to her shoulder.

Doctors at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove call her a miracle baby because with her size and so many underdeveloped organs, Meghans' survival rate was very small.

"When she was born none of us was sure how long she was going to live because the survival is about ten percent and so we all thought, does she have a few minutes....few hours to a few days....and now she's a strong baby," Dr. Vibha Thaker says.

Now, Meghan is five months old, weighs 7 pounds, and is 18 inches long. She's been through a lot---escaping blindness, blood clots or cerebral palsy---all conditions associated in premature births.

Meghan is the couple's first child and while they know they had great doctors working on Meghan, these parents are praising a higher being.

"Everyone has been praying for this baby and praying for us as a family to get through this," Renee says.

The family is celebrating their first night at home and they're asking for privacy.

Meghan's eyes and hearing are normal and aside from medication for reflux and baby vitamin drops, she's going to be just fine.
