Pope Francis Named Time's Person Of The Year

Posted: Updated:

Pope Francis, the People's Pope, is Time Magazine's 2013 Person of the Year.

"He took the name of a humble saint and then called for a church of healing," writes Time Magazine.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became Pope earlier this year in March. He is very popular within and outside the Catholic Church for his emphasis on compassion and tolerance. Pope Francis has also avoided the luxurious living of many of his predecessors.

Born from humble beginnings, the native of Buenos Aires has worked as a bouncer, janitor and lab assistant before joining the Jesuits.

Whistleblower and leaker Edward Snowden finished second as Time announced its choice on the "Today" show Wednesday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
