Gwinnett County woman shares amazing weight loss story

Posted: Updated:

A Gwinnett County woman hopes that her amazing weight loss story can inspire others.

When she began her transformation, Sabrina Gorman weight 286 pounds. She felt embarrassed and ashamed that her weight had gotten so out of control. But she made up her mind to do something about it -- and she did.

Gorman's wake-up call came seven years ago when a friend shared photos taken at her son's third birthday party. Sabrina was in her early 30s and knew she'd put on weight, but she barely recognized the woman looking back at her.
"I was literally just blown away by what I saw -- that was just not the way I'd pictured in my head," Gorman said.

The assistant in the Gwinnett County Schools' special education department said it hit her: it was now or never.

"I just decided that day that there was no turning back," Gorman said.

The next day, at close to 300 pounds, Sabrina walked into Bodyplex Fitness in Grayson and climbed on a treadmill.

"So, I was up at 4 a.m. every morning to get to the gym by 5 o'clock," Gorman said.

She hadn't exercised in years,

"I was very embarrassed to be there. I was embarrassed to be the size that I was," Gorman said.
But she came back the next day, and the next.

"I decided that I needed to put my pride aside, and just go in and do what I needed to do to get healthy," Gorman said. "My goal was to be able to walk one mile without stopping."

Getting active was only part of the challenge. With two kids and a full-time job, she had no idea how to cook healthy.

"I did not know anything about nutrition. I'd always ate whatever I'd wanted," she said.

So Sabrina bought a book and started teaching herself about protein, fiber and complex carbohydrates: how to eat for energy.

"It really kind of changed the way I looked at food and thought about food," she said.

Her biggest challenge: "I had no concept of portion control."

So she bought a food scale and started measuring what she was cooking.

"Initially, honestly, I was shocked. I was eating two or three servings in one meal, of one item," Gorman said.

Back at the gym, after two months on the treadmill, Sabrina got up the nerve to try a group fitness class. It's called BodyPump -- high-energy music mixed with high rep strength training.

"I stood close to the door so I could make a quick exit if I needed to," Gorman said. "But it literally changed my life. I think I immediately fell in love with the class and the concept."

Over the next 18 months, Sabrina re-sculpted her body and dropped 140 pounds, The old Sabrina melted away into the new Sabrina. The woman who didn't want her picture taken blossomed.

Next year. Sabrina will turn 40 and marry her fiancé David. She says that she's walking proof that no matter how far you have to go, you can get there.
