Detroit police solve 20-year-old murder mystery

Detroit police say DNA evidence has helped solved a homicide from 20 years ago.

Officials announced an open murder charge Friday against 57-year-old Johnny Kennedy, who is in prison serving time for a murder committed in 1996. Kennedy apparently has been under suspicion for a few years. Fox 2's Alexis Wiley reports he was just weeks away from being paroled.

The case involves the death of a 27-year-old woman whose body was found in a Detroit building in November 1993.

Analysis by the Michigan State Police found that Kennedy's DNA matched evidence from the scene.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says this is just one of many cold cases in Detroit and that he is dedicated to solving more.

"We are rolling out a new major case squad that will be a collaborative effort between the Michigan State Police and Detroit Police Department and part of it will address cold cases," Chief Craig says.
