A Deltona mother had quite a scare when she woke up to find a burglar in her bedroom.
Volusia County Sheriff's office said Eliel Rodgriguez, 26, broke into a home on East Normandy Boulevard in Deltona just before 1 a.m. on Saturday. Deputies said he walked into the home through the garage door and went into the victim's bedroom where the 43-year-old mother was sleeping.
She woke up, saw Rodriguez standing by her dresser where she kept her valuables, asked him what he was doing. Deputies said the suspect appeared confused and left the room. At that same moment, deputies said the victim's 20-year old son and his two friends were in the backyard. They saw the stranger enter the house and went inside to confront the crook.
Investigators said the victims' son and his friends told Rodriguez to leave the house. He did, but deputies say he soon returned to the house. Deputies said the suspect yelled at the victim's son and tried to provoke a fight.
"It's kind of scary, but it's started happening more around here than you think," said Mike Mulkey, who lives nearby.
Deputies arrived on scene minutes a few later and arrested Rodriguez. Investigators said he denied being in the house.
"Yeah, I'm worried that it could happen," said Tonya Flagherty, who also lives in Deltona. "It makes me want to call ADT and get a new system put in tomorrow."
Rodgriguez was charged with unarmed burglary of an occupied dwelling. He's now out of jail on $2500 bond.
