Call For Action: Why a viewer turned volunteer

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

Lydia Walker lives on a fixed income. Fold into that : she admits she knows nothing about cars. When she took her vehicle in for some repairs, she was surprised to get a bill for major repairs totaling nearly $2,100.

That's a bill she says she can't pay.

She says she dropped off her car because of a "check engine" light, but she ended up, among other things, with new tires. Walker says she never requested the tires. Walker did not have the cash on hand to cover the repairs, and says she used money left on a Kroger gas card to pay to get her car back.

Walker says she then took her car to a friend who she says is a licensed, certified mechanic. Walker says his diagnosis was a missing gas cap. Upset, this Atlantan and FOX5 viewer wrote a letter to the car maker's CEO. That got the engine started, but to get to the finish line she needed Call for Action to get results.

In the end, she received reimbursement in the amount of  $2,099.81.

Walker was so delighted with the outcome, she became a Call For Action volunteer.

We already know about some of the fees our banks charge -- the monthly fee, the overdraft charge, out-of-network and minimum balance fees. That's standard stuff. But did you know that the average checking account has 30 fees attached?
