Suspected drunk driver leads troopers on a high speed chase

Posted: Updated:

Video recorded on a Florida Highway Patrol dashboard camera just after 1 a.m. on Sunday morning shows a trooper following someone reported as a reckless driver.

"The trooper got behind that suspect vehicle and noticed that it was obviously weaving, so definite signs of impairment on the part of the driver," said Sgt. Kim Montes.
You can see in the video the driver initially appears to pull over and slow down, but after a while, he speeds off with the trooper on his tail.
"They reach speed at about 125 miles an hour, but because the trooper had concerns of the vehicle up ahead that were Southbound, the trooper actually shut down his lights and sirens," Montes said.
Troopers say the driver then quickly tried to get on SR 429 from the Turnpike when he spun out in the median.
"A Lake County deputy, who just happened to be going home, unaware of what was going on, was on the ramp, turned around, activated his lights," Montes said.
That's when the video shows the suspect vehicle hit the marked Lake County Sheriff's patrol car head on.  The suspect immediately gets out of the car and tries to run, but the deputy stops him.
After a struggle, the driver, 47-year-old Ossie Irvine is arrested for drunk driving and other offenses and placed in the back of the trooper's car.  According to FHP, it's Irvine's sixth DUI arrest.
"Driving on a suspended license, should have never been behind the wheel, and not only not behind the wheel but now he's driving behind the wheel severally impaired, so really put all those drivers that were traveling southbound at risk," Montes said.
