More Information On Carjacking Victim

Posted: Updated:
Short Hills, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The investigation into the carjacking at the Short Hills Mall on Sunday that ended in a murder continues and more information is coming out about the young couple.

According to reports the couple was madly in love and the two were planning to start a family in the very near future.

The couple lived in Hoboken, New Jersey, but the victim Dustin Friedland was originally from Toms River. He was the oldest of three siblings and came from a very close family. Friedland attended Toms River High School North where he was an avid rower and swimmer. Most recently, Friedland worked in Neptune as an attorney.

Some speculate because of his background in law he may have been a target. Security expert Jonathan Gilliam chimed in on how his profession comes into play. “You collect evidence which includes video cameras then you start looking at it trying to build up a motive for why this would have happened. Definitely the fact that he is an attorney, depending on what type of attorney he was, who he could have covered, and once they get prints off the vehicle and they start to identify some players that might have been involved that could start to come into play,” he said.

Gilliam also chimed in on how an investigation like this works. “Somebody doesn’t just wake up one morning and say I’m going to be bad and I’m going to go hijack a car, these are normally criminals with a long line of history, gang affiliation. I think from a law enforcement perspective, when look at this they’re gonna actually look at the event that happened and work backwards. Because it was a carjacking and a homicide, they are gonna look at both of those things and try to see if there is any modus operandi that is normal, where they took the vehicle, was it a place they took that vehicle before and also they will do fingerprints on the car. They are gonna look at the evidence they have and then take that and develop the investigative pie,” he said.

Gilliam wants people to remember that they can be helpful in this investigation too. “Having been an FBI agent I can tell you that good tips from aware citizens is one of the greatest things that can help an investigation unfold,” he said.
