A new road that planners say it could help save lives in Central Florida when there's a hurricane is now under construction in Brevard County.
Crews began rolling out asphalt for part of 22-mile loop around Palm Bay, known as the Palm Bay Parkway. City officials say, once completed, it will alleviate traffic issues in the area for commuters and give nearby residents an escape route for hurricanes.
Phase 1 includes a 2.1 mile section that begins on Malabar Road and runs north to Emerson Drive. The Parkway will extend to an I-95 interchange near Micco Road, opening up southern Palm Bay to new development, city leaders say.
