'Armed Samaritan' helps amid robbery in northeast Minneapolis; suspects sought

Posted: Updated:

An armed robbery in northeast Minneapolis was halted by a Good Samaritan who was in the right place at the right time and was willing to do something about what he saw at his neighborhood market.

Matt Dosser was just out for a walk when he became a hero.

"I was actually panicked inside the store," Mohamed Ahmed, owner of University Market. "You don't see that every day."

Even though it was cold outside, Ahmed admits he had a bad feeling when two men came into his store with their hoods up and their faces partially covered.

"I was going to ask him to pull his hoodie up, but I'm expecting something then going wrong," he recalled.

As it turned out, Ahmed's gut feeling was right. After wandering around for a couple minutes and asking strange questions, the pair made their move.

"The one on my right hand came around the counter with the gun in his hand pointed at me, and the other one jumped on top of the counter," Ahmed said.

While one robber went for the cash in the register, the other began rifling through Ahmed's pockets. When the clerk started to fight back, he got pistol whipped in the head. Fortunately, Ahmed still managed to chase the men out of his store, lock the door and call 911.

Yet, that didn't stop the armed robbers -- until they were confronted by an equally well-armed citizen.

"All I know is the situation that I saw was two individuals who were extremely agitated, very angry, trying to get in the store -- and one of them had a firearm," Dosser said.

Dosser, who once studied law enforcement and has a permit to carry, pulled a gun of his own and sent the two men running.

"I un-holstered my weapon. I kept it close; I kept it at a ready," he said.

Once the two robbers had fled, Dosser convinced Ahmed the threat was gone and helped administer first aid until police arrived.

"I came up to the store and I saw blood all over Mohamed," Dosser remembered.

Despite half a dozen staples to secure the cut to his head, the owner of University Market is doing OK. Now, he hopes images from his surveillance cameras will help identify the crooks.

"If somebody comes with a gun at you, he can do anything with a gun," Ahmed said. "This is not for fun. This is serious. Somebody come for your life. Like, you give them whatever they want or they going to shoot you. It's sad but true."

It's not the first time Dosser has interrupted a crime in progress either. A few years ago, he saved a man who was being severely beaten without ever having to fire a shot. He says that although police do a great job, they can't be everywhere all of the time.

Anyone with information regarding the robbers' identities is urged to call Minneapolis police.
