MESA, Ariz. -

It's not going to be a very merry Christmas for one suspected shoplifted who attempted to take down an off-duty deputy working in a valley Walmart store.

The suspect took off running and just like Santa, took to the roof to make his getaway, but he didn't make it very far.

It was just before 5 a.m. Thursday when Andrew Fasbender heard something on his roof.  When he stepped outside to walk his dog, his house was surrounded by Mesa Police officers.

"Is all they told me was watch out for a guy running with full tattoos, no shirt and he's been tasered already," he said.

By the time he got around the block, officers had the man in custody -- a suspected shoplifter that was eluding the law by jumping onto people's homes and running through back yards.

"The policeman knocked on my door just to basically explain why they were in my yard.. that's about it.. he wouldn't tell me anything that had happened," said Randy Larson.

According to Mesa Police, it all started at the Walmart near Dobson and Rio Salado.  The shoplifter was approached by an off-duty deputy.  The suspect threw a bicycle in the deputy's direction and was tased before taking off.

Officers were called in as back up and used good old fashioned police work to catch the guy.

"We have no K9 dogs to help us, no helicopter to help us, so it's hard to keep track of him.. the more units, the better, so we can surround him and start converging on him," said Sgt. William Abbiatti.

The suspect, who complained of a sore shoulder, faces several charges, including shoplifting and assaulting an officer.

A spokesperson for Mesa Police says the off-duty deputy involved in this incident suffered a hurt knee and that injury was getting checked out.

The suspect's name was not released.
