Holiday tipping guide

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When it comes to tipping during the holiday season, a general rule of thumb is show appreciation the best way you can, says reporter Catey Hill of Marketwatch.

If you can afford to, give a cash tip. If you can't, give an item or write a thank you note.

Here are some more general rules of holiday tipping:

· The point of holiday tipping is to show people who serve you year round how much you care; tip people who you have a personal connection with and who go above and beyond just their job duties.

· If you plan to give someone less than $20, typically a gift or gift card is more appropriate than cash

· In general, it is most appropriate to give cash to people who work year-round for tips - like your regular hairstylist or bartender - though others like cash too.

What to tip child care providers and teachers

· Regular babysitter: One evenings pay plus gift from child

· Nanny: One week's pay plus gift from child

· Teacher: Do NOT give cash and instead have your child give her a small gift; the same goes for coaches, music instructors etc. Baked goods like cookies are a good gift.

What to tip home help

· Housekeeper: About $50

· Doormen: $25 - $100 apiece

· Gardener/lawn care person: $20 - $50

· Your buildings' handyman: $10 - $50 each

· Building super: $50 or more

What to tip manicurists, hairstylists and masseurs

· The general rule here is to tip your hairstylist, facialist, massage therapist roughly the cost of one session. If you don't go to these people regularly, no need to give them an additional holiday tip.

What to tip delivery people

· Postman: They cannot accept cash, only gifts less than $20 in value

· UPS orFed Exnonn: A gift card to a local lunch spot

· Newspaper deliveryperson: $15 - $20 for daily delivery, $5 - $15 for weekly
