Thieves Steal Expensive Bronze Doors From Cemetery Mausoleums

Posted: Updated:
UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

At the Arlington Cemetery in Upper Darby all the bronze mausoleum doors are now chained shut after thieves broke in here this week and stole two sets of solid bronze doors worth $36,000.

"They're very heavy, they're solid bronze, probably four hundred fifty to five hundred pounds for a set," cemetery manager Gary Buss told Fox 29.

"Despicable to do anything in a cemetery, let alone something like that," said Judy Gallagher who was at the cemetery visiting the grave sites of several family members.

The first set of doors disappeared last weekend and were reported stolen on Monday. On Wednesday, police patrolling the 118-year-old cemetery spotted another set of doors missing. Police believe the thieves carried the heavy doors to the fence line somewhere in this area and dropped them over, possibly into a waiting vehicle.

"It's outrageous, it's a disgrace it really is," Buss said.

"A this time of year, that's the worst part and what are they going to get from it. They'll get caught," Gallagher said.

Investigators took castings of several foot prints found in the snow here and fingerprints, hoping that evidence might lead them to the thieves.

"In some cemeteries it could be considered a hate crime, so I really hope they catch these guys and prosecute to full extent," Buss added.

Visitors to the cemetery on Thursday like Gallagher and her husband were outraged at the cemetery robbers who pulled off this first of its kind theft here.

"Are you sick? Is something wrong with you, to do something like that? Definitely," she said.

"These are very unique pieces, they're very easy to recognize, and I can't imagine what type of scrap dealer would actually take these doors. So I'm really hopeful we get them back," Buss said.

Police have stepped up patrols through cemetery. Police are checking local scrap yards to see if anyone has shown up with the doors or pieces of the doors.

The cemetery is now trying to contact the families who own the mausoleums where the doors were taken.
