A father is being held in the Orange County Jail for child abuse, after his son was found dead.
Darell Avant Sr., 26, made his first appearance in court on Thursday. He is accused of abusing his son, 5-year-old Darell Avant Jr.
It was Wednesday evening when deputies rushed to an apartment complex off Burroughs Court in Orlando and found the child dead.
According to the arrest report, Darell Sr. picked up Darell Jr. from school after acting up in class and took him back home. The father told deputies that he popped his son on his buttocks a couple of times. Then, he ordered his son to perform push-ups and squats for 20 minutes. After taking a shower, he says his son complained of being dizzy and fell on the floor.
The arrest report states that it was a 25 minute timeframe before the father called a friend for help. After that, Darell Sr. called 911 and then deputies arrived. According to the arrest report, the little boy had injuries on this upper torso, abdomen, arms and back.
Investigators say Avant is a repeat offender with a history of domestic violence. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death. A judge ordered Avant Sr, to be held without bond.
