Facebook group 'Detroiters Helping Each Other' giving food, clothing and holiday gifts

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The room is full of donations - clothes, toys, stuffed animals and so much more - for anyone who needs it. It's all thanks to two women, Jessica Ramirez and Michelle Colon, and countless volunteers involved with the Facebook page "Detroiters Helping Each Other." The page was started in October by Ramirez, who lives in Detroit.

"I was 13 and homeless. I know what it's like to have nothing. I had a rough life," Ramirez says. And that's why Ramirez has made it her mission to help others in need.

The two women have been collecting donations for families, like one in Hamtramck who lost everything in a house fire. They also have gift baskets for seniors at a group home and a small mountain of toys for children who would otherwise go without gifts for Christmas.

"No matter what anybody says about people in Michigan -- or Detroit -- we all love our community and we stick together and help each other," Ramirez said.

In a few short months, the Facebook page has helped more than 200 people. The women say their efforts will continue all year round, but first they will make Christmas a little brighter for their neighbors.

This Sunday, Dec. 22, from 2-4 p.m. Santa will be at Charlie's Bar located at 1503 Springwells St. in Detroit.  Donated items will be given away to parents and children in need.

You can also still donate to this effort on the group's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DetroitersHelping
