Villa Rica Christmas display inspires hate-filled letter

Posted: Updated:
VILLA RICA, Ga. -

A Christmas display in Villa Rica is pitting neighbor against neighbor. The man who lives in the home says that the display expresses his Christmas cheer, but some neighbors are expressing a different emotion. They hate it.

The keyword here is hate because someone channeled that hate into a mean, and at time racist letter.

The Smith family has been helping to make the neighborhood merry and bright in their own way for seven years now. A look around that neighborhood will reveal how.

When Steven Smith first opened that letter, he says he was horrified, but now he is determined to make his display bigger and brighter. The anonymous letter describes the display as crude, ridiculous and "low income."

"I cannot imagine how on earth you really think this is 'decoration' when it is a total misjudgment of how to decorate for the occasion," the letter states.

The family put up their festivity up for all to see each year. They arraign dozens of displays and power thousands of lights.

"It's definitely worth it. All the kids coming by, sticking heads out of SUVS saying 'Wow, great! Can we go by again?'" said Steven Smith.

"It's Christmas. It's Christmas! Yay!" Steven's daughter Ariel expressed.

But the Santas, snowmen and candy canes are hitting a sour note with some neighbors. The nasty letter arrived this week.

"NO ONE ELSE in Fairfield decorates as 'poorly' and with such 'misjudgment' and 'stupidity' as YOU do," the letter states.

Some of the sentiments are even shockingly racist.

"...seriously looks like a 'low income', Mexican or Black junked up 'yard sale' in a poor side of town..." the letter states.

The lengthy letter isn't signed, but has set of six random initials at the bottom.

"They don't want to show their true colors," said Steven Smith in regards to what the lack of real signatures means to him.

Hate hasn't dimmed the holiday cheer of this Fairfield Plantation father and daughter.

"I love it. It's bright and colorful and agh!" said Ariel Smith.

"They actually have no Christmas joy at all inside of them. None!" said Steven smith. "I say heck with them! I'll buy more!"
