Commission considers seeking help from Deal

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Columbia County commissioners are looking to the governor for help in dealing with allegations involving Tax Commissioner Kay Allen.

The commission is set to meet Monday in Augusta to discuss whether to ask Gov. Nathan Deal to get involved in the controversy.

The August Chronicle reports Allen has collected more than $160,000 in compensation from the towns of Harlem and Grovetown through deals the commission wasn't aware of.

Agreements between Allen and the towns allowed her office to collect taxes for the municipalities. In return, the cities paid 2 percent of their total collections.

Allen says she's legally allowed to keep money through the deals. But the contracts are part of a joint investigation by the FBI and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
