Public relations executive Justine Sacco fired after insensitive AIDS in Africa Tweet

Posted: Updated:

A public lesson in the power of social media after Justine Sacco, a former PR executive for an internet company called Interactive Corp, posted a Tweet over the weekend.

The Tweet read, "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white."

The Tweet was posted during her flight. The internet caught on to the offensive tweet and it spread like wildfire.

"Has Justine Landed Yet" was a trending topic all day as people waited to see if she apologized or responded once she saw the storm the tweet generated.

Sacco eventually deleted her social media accounts, but the damage was done.

She was fired by Interactive Corp, which released a statement saying, "There is no excuse for the hateful statements that have been made and we condemn them unequivocally."

But the company also defended her from other Twitter users saying hateful things about her writing. "We hope that time and action, and the forgiving human spirit, will not result in the wholesale condemnation of an individual who we have otherwise known to be a decent person at core."

Sacco also released her own statement to ABC News saying in part she's ashamed of her insensitivity to the millions of people living with the virus.

She also apologized to the nation of South Africa, where she was born, and to her friends and family.

DENVER - Technically, it's still summer for a few more days but it's snowing already in Colorado! The Denver area saw a dusting Wednesday and could get a bit more snow as a cold front moves through. Fortunately for residents there, this is just temporary and they'll enjoying 70 degree days again soon.
