UCF loses big on Fiesta Bowl tickets

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The University of Central Florida is returning 10,000 unsold tickets to the Fiesta Bowl.

UCF is obligated to purchase 17,500 tickets to the game, and the school said they needed to sell 13,000 tickets to break even. The school has 7,500 tickets to sell or distribute and officials say they have sold a little more than 5,000 so far.

Kevin McGlown is one fan who will be going to Tempe.

"It's such a great opportunity for the school and for the team," he said.  "I had to find a way to make it work."

McGlown is estimating he will spend $1,200 between just the airfare, hotel and his game ticket. That is the exact reason that season ticket holder Jeff Marshall will not be going.

"I absolutely wanted to go. It was a really, really difficult decision to decide not to go, and it really came down to financials. I actually have a friend in Phoenix I could have stayed with. The tickets were not a hurdle. It was the flights. It was the airfare."

Both men say they would have gone for certain to either the Orange or Sugar Bowls had UCF been selected to play there. McGlown wanted to take his entire family.

"My wife, my daughter and I were going to go to the Sugar Bowl, potentially my Dad too, now I'm going to be going by myself to the Fiesta Bowl"

Instead of going to the game, Marshall will buy a ticket anyway and donate it to a soldier through the school's ticket buying program. Those tickets will go to active duty military personnel stationed at Luke Air Force Base. Marshall did end up spending the $1,200 dollars anyway, and plans to stay home for the game.

"I realized it would cost me about 1,200 bucks!  Me, one person to go to the game, and I went to see that I could buy a 60 inch TV for 1,200, and made the decision that the one time experience for one person as opposed to several years of a whole family using a TV, and that was the decision I made."

Baylor is also having difficulty selling its allotted number of tickets, according to the Dallas Morning News.  The school will reportedly return "more than 5,000" unsold tickets to the Fiesta Bowl committee.
