Stray voltage shocks dogs in East Village

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some dogs refuse to to walk on the sidewalk past a house on East 7th Street in Manhattan. On Friday and Sunday, Atticus, a Russian wolf hound, was zapped by stray electricity on the same spot, his owners say.

The owner of another dog, Sami, also believes his dog was zapped by stray voltage on this same spot in the the East Village. Dunkin's dog walker noticed the golden retriever collapsed on the same sidewalk.

Con Edison admits electricity did leak from the manhole to the sidewalk. Utility crews bypassed the underground cables and fed electricity above ground with alternative cables to an adjacent townhouse. Similar stray voltage shocked some dogs on East 3rd Street. Both no longer have stray electricity in the sidewalk. A spokesman from Con Ed said the situation has been resolved. But some of the dog owners disagree. The owners said Con Ed did not respond until police were called and even when Con Ed set up cones and yellow caution tape, no one knew what it was for.

Atticus' owners feel a sign warning of stray voltage should have been put up.

A spokesperson said Con Ed is checking into this in an effort to make sure these East Village residents are satisfied with the utility's response.
