Transgender Birth Certificate Controversy

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) - There’s a controversial bill sitting on Governor Christie’s desk waiting to see if he’ll sign it.

Bill 4097 would allow transgender individuals who have not had gender reassignment surgery to change their birth certificate to reflect their new gender.

Transgender female, Brynn Cassidy, chimed in to discuss why a bill like this is necessary.

“The major misconception is that all transgender people get the surgery and some transgender people don’t undergo any for various reasons. They may not want to, that may not be their desire, or it may be a simple cost problem,” she said.

It’s already legal for transgender individuals to change their birth certificate if they’ve had sex change surgery, but LGBT advocates say that some don’t want to have the surgery or can’t afford it and hormone therapy should also apply.

Senator Sam Thompson opposes this legislation. He said he’ll introduce a bill to allow transgender individuals to add a statement that says they are now living as the new gender but opposes changing what he calls historical documents.

“You don’t change history,” he said.

Governor Christie is currently considering public comments on the issue while he decides whether or not to sign it. You can go to our chasing New Jersey Facebook page and tell us if you think people should have the right to change the gender on their birth certificate?

Yesterday was Earth Day and people all across New Jersey took time to celebrate Mother Earth. Founder of the Astor Free Community Garden in Jersey City, Tinina Bland, organized a day of gardening with some of the city’s hardest working two and three year olds. “We reach out throughout the entire community, we grow collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, four different types of tomatoes, watermelon, pumpkin and this year we’re introducing fruit,” Bland explained.
