2,600 still without power in SE Mich. after last weekend's ice storm

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

As of 9 p.m. Friday DTE Energy says about 2,400 customers remain without service in southeast Michigan. Work was hampered Friday by melting ice causing additional damage - in some cases to lines that had previously been repaired.

The sound of generators resonates through one Lake Orion neighborhood and throughout the home of the Sniders, who have been powerless since last weekend's ice storm. They have had enough.

"I'm more than frustrated. I'm tired," Dawn Snider says. She says she's been on the phone with DTE Energy every day trying to get her power restored. Living in her house right now is her husband, who has pancreatic cancer; her daughter who is eight and a half months pregnant; and her son and his wife and their two-year-old child. It's crowded, but it makes the most sense with the cost of generator fuel and food.

"It's been dark. We are trying to, kind of, stay low key, spend family time together, take it for what it is," says Michael Palmer.

Their Christmas this year consisted of a crock pot-cooked meal and cheese and crackers. And they are not alone. The roughly 20 plus homes in their cul de sac remain without electricity six days after the initial outage and many of the neighbors are elderly, making matters worse.

"You look at it in terms of, maybe it's because we're a smaller neighborhood, a smaller outage, maybe we're lower on the priority list? But, at the same time, this keeps happening; there's got to be a reason behind it," says Palmer.

In November, a windstorm knocked out power to the Sniders for four days. Dealing with it all over again is too much on top of everything else.

"I'm not trying to sound ungrateful by any means. I am thankful for every day that we have, but, they don't give us a break. And then to find out we have to apply for a 25 dollar credit for reimbursement for the gas, which is costing us 35, 40 dollars a day just to run the generator," says Snider.

UPDATE: The Sniders power was restored later Friday evening, shortly after 6 p.m.

DTE crews have been working around the clock to get power restored. They currently have more than 500 lineman from out of state working on the power problem. They hope to have everyone back online by the end of the weekend.

DTE has restored power to about 98 percent, or approximately 147,600 of the 150,000 customers impacted by the ice storm that hit Southeast Michigan last weekend. Also, this week's continued harsh weather conditions knocked out power to an additional 52,000 customers and about 4,200 of these customers remain out of service.
