18-year-old man fatally shot in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Police in New Haven are trying to figure out who shot an 18-year-old man they found lying in the roadway.

Investigators have identified the dead man as Javier Martinez of New Haven.

Police say they received a 911 call shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday reporting gunshots in the area of Hemmingway Avenue and Russell Street. The caller also reported that there was a person lying in the roadway.

Officers responded to the scene, accompanied by emergency medical technicians who immediately pronounced Martinez dead.

Investigators have not identified a suspect. They ask anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or have any information to call New Haven police detectives.

    Fairfield fire officials say a man who committed suicide by drinking potassium cyanide prompted a hazardous materials alert that shut part of a neighborhood. Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola told the Connecticut Post that the unidentified man left a note warning first responders. He locked the house and went to bed before swallowing the poison. A portion of the neighborhood was shut Monday night, but neighbors were not in danger.
