Newark Murder Rate Up In 2013

Posted: Updated:
Newark, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The number of homicides in Newark went above 100 for the first time since 2006 and now mayoral hopefuls are holding press conferences, calling for an end to violence.

In the last 4 days alone, there have been 6 shooting deaths in New Jersey’s biggest city. Sadly, two of those killed were innocent teenagers, Kasson Morman and Zainee Hailey, both hit by stray bullets in what's believed to be a gang-related shoot-out.

Over the weekend, Councilman and Newark Mayoral candidate Ras Baraka was joined by family members of innocent 15 year-old Kasson Morman to make a plea for an end to gang activity and street violence. Baraka called on local and state police and Senators Menendez and former Newark Mayor Cory Booker to answer Newark's cries for help.

Then, yesterday another candidate for the May election, Shavar Jeffries, was also supported by families of the victims at a press conference pleading for help.

It seems like both of these mayoral candidates may be asking for the same thing, less violence, but Jeffries says he's the one who is actually doing something about it. Jeffries released his "Jeffries Plan”, a detailed outline of his proposal for a safer Newark. In this plan he talks about the actions that need to be taken NOW, not come May. Included in this plan is the hiring of 75 additional police officers in Newark, more crime prevention tactics and enforcement and programs that will help re-entry for minor crime offenders.

In reality, all of these goals are going to cost Newark money, but Jeffries thinks the cost is not the only issue, it’s also getting people in Washington, like Cory Booker, on board.

“We can pay for these resources with existing municipal dollars. Obviously if the feds wants to kick in money, we’d be welcoming of that. What we’re focused on is the city of Newark, we’d love the federal support but we can’t focus on it we’re in a crisis state right now,” he said.

In the end, all of the potential mayoral candidates including Anibal Ramos have asked Booker and Menendez to get involved.

The race in Newark to replace now Senator Cory Booker is getting publicity for all the wrong reasons. Some are choking it up to dirty politics with campaign buses being torched, offices being broken into and inappropriate fliers circulating around town encouraging people to “vote black”, even though both candidates are African American. With many people questioning what is going on in Newark, former Mayor Sharpe James chimed in to discuss the city’s current political landscape.
