Movie Critic Matt Atchity: New Movies For The New Year

Posted: Updated:

There is only one major release this weekend at the box office, "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones", and there's a reason why. Matt Atchity explained to Steve and Maria why studios are banking on flicks already in theaters. Movies like "American Hustle", "The Wolf of Wall Street", and "Saving Mister Banks" are in it for the long haul.

"You've got a lot of movies that came out in December and some in November that had very small releases so that they could qualify for Oscar nominations... now they're going to start expanding out into wide release over the next month or two months in advance of the Oscar because as those nominations come in, the studios will capitalize on those nominations...they used that hype to get people to go see them."

So of course "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones" is the complete opposite of a possible Oscar nominee...with the studio hoping to cash in on moviegoers who don't want anything too heady this weekend.

"It wasn't really widely screened for critics..the people that like these movie are going to go see them regardless of what the critics say. The few critics that have seen it are kinda split on it. Some of them say it is effective and does what it needs to do, the others say it does more of the same, not really that scary...kinda buyer beware."

One of the movies going into wider release soon is "Lone Survivor" with Mark Wahlberg. Matt says this one is hard to watch but the reviews say it's worth it.

This is a very brutal, very harsh movie, the critics mostly like it. They say that although the themes are a little heavy handed, it's really effective and it's an unflinching look at what guys are going through in that part of the world. It's something that's probably worth seeing ultimately."

Matt Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

‘Rotten Tomatoes TV Zone' is up now on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
