Man grateful for execution date of son's killer

Posted: Updated:

VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The father of Jimmy Ryce says he's grateful that Gov. Rick Scott has set an execution date for the boy's killer.

Don Ryce met with members of the media Friday afternoon at his home in Vero Beach. He told reporters that time doesn't heal all wounds, but it does heal over scars.

Jimmy Ryce was kidnapped, raped and murdered almost 20 years ago in rural Miami-Dade County. Scott signed a death warrant Thursday for Juan Carlos Chavez, who was convicted in 1998. Chavez is scheduled to die by lethal injection Feb. 12.

Jimmy had just left his school bus when Chavez kidnapped him. He raped the boy and held him at gunpoint, finally shooting him as he tried to escape. He chopped the body up, put the remains in large planters and then sealed them with concrete.
