SE Michigan braces for low temps, digs out from snow

Posted: Updated:

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Southeast Michigan residents are preparing for diving temperatures as they dig out from more than 15 inches of snow in places.

The FOX 2 Weather Authority says that as of Monday morning 16.2 inches of snow fell in Flint, 15.5 inches fell north of Jackson, 15.4 inches fell at Howell and 15 inches was reported north of Battle Creek. In the Detroit suburb of Romulus, 10.2 inches was reported at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. In Oakland County, 13.5 inches fell in Waterford, 7.5 inches in Farmington Hills and 7.4 inches in Royal Oak.

Snow wrapped up after starting Saturday or Sunday. Roads are slippery, with numerous crashes. AAA Michigan says it has helped at least 2,200 people as of 4 p.m. Monday. The problems include dead batteries, cars in ditches after slipping off roads, no gas and people locked out of their vehicles while warming them up.

Hundreds of schools have already canceled class for Tuesday.

With the snow over, a whirlpool of frigid, dense air known as a "polar vortex" is descending into the Midwest, pummeling parts of the are with a dangerous cold that could break decades-old records. Temperatures are set to drop late Monday or early Tuesday as low as minus 15.

A Wind Chill Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Monday through 7 a.m. Wednesday. Overnight wind chills could fall to -40 degrees.

Many state offices are closed today, including those in Lansing. Secretary of State branches in two dozen Michigan counties aren't open.

In Detroit, 36th District Court is closed with the exception of felony arraignments which will take place at noon. All branches of the Detroit Public Library are closed as well.

Officials at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice say the building is open today, despite an earlier email that claimed otherwise.

In the Detroit suburb of Lake Orion, police say heavy snow is believed to have caused the roof to collapse at a two-story building that once housed a bar. No injuries are reported. About a foot of snow had fallen on the area by the time the roof collapsed.
