PHOENIX -

A Phoenix man is accused of killing his 13-year-old son with an ax because he believed the boy was a demon and going to eat him.

People gathered to remember the boy by holding a vigil in his honor on Sunday.

David Sebastian Sherrill would have been finishing winter break and starting back up at Madison No. 1 Middle School on Monday.

His classmates are left grieving and trying to find peace with the news of his death.

Holding candles, saying prayers, sharing memories of 13-year-old David Sebastian Sherrill: classmates gathered for a vigil where Phoenix police found David's body on New Year's Eve.

It's a hard realization for the middle school students, some of which are experiencing the death of a loved one for the very first time.

"Just the nicest guy and I don't know why anyone would do that to him, why?" said Lexi Hartless, a classmate.

Young teens question how a father could kill his son. It's something no one can answer, but many found solace visiting the teen's home and saying goodbye.

"That the vigil felt more peaceful, it was like a relief and I know he's in a safer place," said Morgan Saben, a classmate.

Friends, neighbors and family are trying not to dwell on the way he died, but illuminate how he lived.

"He had a big heart and he was just an awesome kid. I was glad I got to know him," said Saben.

"As horrific as this thing has been, the love and encouragement has been equally great. I can't imagine facing this without that," said Andy Sherrill, David's Uncle.

A Wells Fargo account has been created to help pay for funeral expenses.

You can donate to the fund at any Wells Fargo under the name David Sebastian Sherrill.
