SeaWorld opens new exhibit to allow more whale interaction

Posted: Updated:

Beginning Jan. 7 visitors to SeaWorld will be able to see the Orcas up close.

The park is debuting a new whale interaction experience to showcase the relationship between  trainers and the animals.

It's called "Shamu Up Close." The new exhibit opens just as the "One Ocean" killer whale show goes on hiatus for a few months while Shamu Stadium undergoes maintenance.

This new exhibit comes just after eight different performers canceled appearances at SeaWorld Orlando's Bands, Brew & Barbecue music series to be held in February.

The groups cited CNN's documentary "Blackfish," which raises questions about the effects of captivity on whales.
